It was not so long ago when only the big boys had access to this investment called forex trading. There was a time when only the banks and big financial institutions were able to do forex trading. This was so because of the restrictively huge amount of capital that was required to be able to trade currencies. Retail investors would just have to be contented with investing in mutual funds which included forex trading in their portfolio. That is if they even knew of forex as an investment. Trading currencies was not really popular then. When you mention foreign exchange, most people equated it with just physically exchanging currencies usually for the purposes of traveling abroad of paying up for some foreign-sourced goods.
And even if an individual could come up with the necessary capital to trade forex back then, there were still a lot of disadvantages that he would need to overcome. First and foremost among them would be access to information. During a time when internet was not yet the common necessity that it is now, information with regard to the financial markets was a rare commodity. One would have to pay for subscription services from information service providers to be able to get the latest relevant financial news and up-to-the-minute currency quotes. Although information could already travel at the speed of thought, as they say, it still usually came at a price.
Then came the internet. The problem of information being too expensive was suddenly not a problem anymore. Anyone who had a PC with internet access at home could readily access all the relevant information from the web. Suddenly, the big banks and financial institutions who were the only ones who could readily access these information did not enjoy that huge advantage anymore. Also with the internet came the ease of access to the forex brokers. One does not have to physically visit the offices of the forex brokers anymore just to be able to open a forex account. And with the magic of electronic money and electronic banking, even the funding of these account became as easy as clicking the mouse.
And with the market suddenly growing to include the retail forex investors, a lot of brokers suddenly started opening shop, adding fuel to the growth of the lucrative business that is forex. With a lot of forex brokers competing for the investments of the retail individuals, they started lowering the necessary capital to be able to open a forex account. Then the brokers even started introducing mini accounts and even micro accounts for investors who want to try out forex with minimal amount of capital.
The convenience that the internet provided brought about the popularity of forex trading as an investment. Although other investment options like stock trading also gained more popularity with the coming of the internet, forex trading still had some distinct advantages over these other investment options. Factors like the 24-hours-a-day trading in the extremely liquid forex markets all over the world, and the ability to short-sell made it a more popular choice for savvy investors. Aggressive investors especially liked the immediate returns that forex trading brought to their accounts. And the possibility of high returns was usually the common goal among forex investors which actually became possible due to the leverage factor. With forex trading, an investor would be able to control money of up to 400 times his actual investment. Although this certainly can help anyone who target sky-rocketing returns, it also became a double-edged sword, as most investors would later on realize. Although it is often said that 90% of all retail forex investors lose their money within the first three months after making their first forex trade, this did not stop the popularity of forex trading as a very lucrative investment option.
With the recent turmoil in the financial markets, and with some investment houses scamming its investors when it promised to protect their money and do their best to make it grow, some people are now trying out other investment options. And this may actually be another factor to contribute to the still-rising popularity of forex investments.Forex Trading’s Popularity
